Thailand Achieves First Patient Enrollment Outside Japan in the ABLe Study
Bangkok, Thailand – 18 June 2026 – The Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University has successfully enrolled the first patient outside Japan in the ABLe Study, marking a significant milestone in this international research collaboration and the official launch of active patient enrollment among participating sites beyond Japan.
The first patient was enrolled on 18 June 2026 under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Walaiporn Wangchinda and the dedicated study team at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. This achievement represents the First Patient In (FPI) milestone outside Japan and demonstrates Thailand’s growing capacity to contribute to high-impact international clinical research.
The ABLe Study, officially titled “Clinical Prognosis and Molecular Epidemiology of Bacteremia Caused by Third-Generation Cephalosporin-Resistant (3GCR) Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp.: An International Multicenter Observational Study,” is an international multicenter observational study designed to investigate the clinical outcomes and molecular epidemiology of bloodstream infections caused by third-generation cephalosporin-resistant (3GCR) Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species.
These two major pathogens associated with serious bloodstream infections and increasing antimicrobial resistance worldwide. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights into disease prognosis, resistance patterns, and strategies to improve patient care and public health responses.
The successful initiation of the study at Siriraj Hospital follows close collaboration between the Thai research team and international partners within the ARISE network, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance through high-quality clinical research.
This milestone officially opens the active enrollment phase for ARISE member institutions and partner sites outside Japan. Participating sites are encouraged to continue identifying and screening eligible patients to support the successful conduct of this important study.
We, SICRES also thank all investigators, study coordinators, research staff, and collaborating institutions for their continued commitment and partnership. Together, we look forward to generating meaningful evidence that will help improve the prevention and management of antimicrobial-resistant infections worldwide.
